Amateur Sports Association Sermig

Many films tell us the stories of teams and athletes, happening on sports grounds, but actually showing us the adventures of a life or a community and teaching us much more than just sport techniques. Here at Sermig, we are writing our sport story, too. It is not world-famous yet, but it is happening every week, involving fourty big-hearted young people from our neighbourhood.

They form our five-a-side football teams, playing in the FIGC and UISP tournaments.

This story began more than ten years ago on the field of via Carmagnola, behind the Arsenal of Peace. We started playing just for fun, to fill up Sundays afternoons and take some spaces away from pushers. But we found some talented players, so we signed up for competitions and started dreaming of something more.

We believe in “do good, and do it well”, so our first reaction was “we are not good enough”. Five-a-side football is not like playing football, just on a smaller field, it is a completely different sport. It is actually closer to basketball, even if you need to use your feet. So we worked hard, during our little free time, to learn how to play this sport.

Now, we train twice a week and we have moved to a sports hall.

It is actually hard to learn the techniques, fastness and constant focus required by five-a-side football. It happened that we finished the first half of a match being ahead and then we lost our focus, and so our lead. In this sport, the goalkeeper can never rest: he has to be always ready to save and tell the team the best positions to keep. While, the other players always have to collaborate to find some space to play, because in five-a-side football space is never enough to do everything by yourself. Even if you are on the bench, you cannot rest too much and always have to be ready to go back playing, as if you have never stopped.

This story taught us many things. If you do not train, you will not win, even those competitions you think are easy. If you are not focused, someone will outdo you. If you are shy, you should try to open up, while, if you are unruly, you should try to calm down. If you are late, you have to tell it, because someone who counts on you is waiting for you. If you have a different opinion, you politely tell it to know the other’s point of view. Sometimes, you will have to stay on the bench, even if you would really like to play. Finally, you are part of a team and everyone within is fundamental, in order to not be certainly defeated.

It is the different colours of our skins, like the colours of peace on our shirts, that support the unity of our team, in all its rich diversity. We are Italians, Ivorians, Egyptians, Moroccans, Nigerians, Venezuelans, Dominicans, Albanians and Romanians, all united in a single team to shout out “it’s possible”. Our story is a good story, and it is “inspired by true events”, as they say for films.
