Authors at the cinema

Brief and preliminary excursus on the history of cinema: at the end of the 1950s on the pages of a French cinema magazine Les Cahiers du Cinema (still active today), a group of young critics (who later became famous directors such as Truffaut and Godard) theorized that for true artists there are no lesser or better films.

A director's work must be analyzed overall (i.e. also taking into account his previous or previous films) and not according to the film. In their vision, the work is followed as it is made, that is, a film that is analyzed must be seen as the fruit of a broader project, which is that of the author. For the first time, even commercial directors such as Alfred Hitchcock took on a higher level, considered as authors who transposed personal characters into their films such as, in the case of the "master of thrills", that of guilt and redemption.

70 years after this school of thought the common feeling now considers it natural that "easy" authors (such as Steven Spielberg) are all-round artists and to one of the masters of contemporary cinema the National Museum del Cinema dedicates an unmissable tribute.
From October 2023 until April 2024 at the Mole Antonelliana in Turin there will be the opportunity to explore the creative genius of Tim Burton, the director of Edward Scissorhands, Ed Wood, The Factory chocolate, Nightmare before Christmas…

A journey into the visionary universe and creativity of Tim Burton: the main core of the exhibition focuses on the director's personal archive, showing an incredible variety of his creative production. Therefore not only precious documents but also drawings and sketches with the recurring themes and visual motifs from which his characters that characterize his distinctive cinematographic worlds came to life.

An immersive exhibition that is a sort of exclusive journey into the mind of a creative genius, the definitive exploration of Tim Burton's artistic production, inimitable style and specific perspective. Divided into 9 thematic sections, it presents over 500 examples of original works of art, rarely or never seen before, from the beginnings to the most recent projects, including sketches, paintings, drawings, photographs, concept art, storyboards, /i> costumes, moving works, maquettes, puppets and life-size sculptural installations.
