Boston Dynamics presented the new version of its famous humanoid robot Atlas, completely redesigned with electric actuators instead of hydraulic ones. Atlas was born in 2013 as a robot for operations in environments dangerous for humans, but now with its new electric motors it will finally be able to perform useful tasks also in industry and production.
Thanks to the greater flexibility and power provided by electric actuators, the new Atlas can surpass human capabilities by lifting greater weights and moving even more fluidly. These characteristics make it suitable for carrying out repetitive and tiring jobs instead of humans, for example on assembly lines. Boston Dynamics has also partnered with Hyundai to employ Atlas in automotive manufacturing. Thanks to its humanoid abilities, the new Atlas promises to take automation to a higher level, carrying out tasks that are still unachievable for traditional robotic arms. However, we hope that it respects the 3 laws of Robotics.
