Take the challenge

An example of the concerns we may have today is behavior towards third world immigrants. The racism we are demonstrating is very serious. The lack of fraternity is very serious. But the absolute misunderstanding of the phenomenon with respect to the problem of the struggle for development in the world is even more serious. It seems to me real blindness not to understand that this immigration is, on the one hand, inevitable - and therefore to be solved, at least, with rationality - and, on the other, it is one of the most natural ways to reduce the seriousness of the problem.
Here is one thing that has certainly changed over the years. While in the past we had to make every effort to get all immigrants to return to build their country, against the famous brain drain, today we must help them settle down with us to facilitate the development of their country. Emigration is one of the few concrete short-term outlets that the bravest men and women of the Third World have today to help their countries, just as our Italian emigrants did many years ago. Then millions of Italians, together with millions of other Europeans, gave oxygen to old Europe, peacefully invading America. Today others are those who must leave and others those who must welcome.

This is also how the problem of the development of the Third World will be solved: by accepting and allowing a multiracial society to live in peace that respects the values and sensibilities of the places of arrival as well as of departure.
Sacrifices will have to be made on both sides but it will be worth it because from a not easy gestation a new humanity, united and in peace, will emerge, if accepted.
This does not mean forgetting the problems of the nations of the southern hemisphere and giving up on solving them on the spot: the sooner and better you can do it, the less painful emigration will be necessary.
