The little freedom

"Why do you think it's easier to make your dreams come true in Asia, to feel comfortable and happier?" I asked this to some young Italians who "escaped" from Italy and who I met in Thailand, Cambodia, Indonesia and India. The answer was almost unanimous: "Here there is more basic freedom." Only those who have lived both in the West and in the East can understand that curious definition of the Asian advantage due to the low regulation of daily habits and customs. In fact, in several Asian countries, every private initiative - and especially youth entrepreneurship - is free from any form of constraint, permits, controls, licenses, qualifications, all the strings that limit innovation in Italy and Europe. Let's look at some examples of disruptive innovations conceived by young people and implemented in a few weeks.

Planty. In rural areas in India, farmers lack access to agricultural experts for timely diagnosis and treatment of plant diseases, resulting in crop losses and financial hardship. Planty is an AI-powered mobile app that allows farmers to take photos of their crops and receive instant diagnoses of potential diseases and pest infestations. The app also provides advice on appropriate treatments and connects farmers with agricultural experts for further assistance. Planty has helped thousands of farmers improve their yields and incomes by reducing inequalities in access to agricultural knowledge and resources.

Empower Energy. In Nepal, many rural communities lack access to electricity, making it difficult to pump water for irrigation and other essential needs. Empower Energy has developed solar-powered water pumps that provide a sustainable and affordable solution for irrigation and water access in off-grid communities. The pumps have increased agricultural productivity and improved access to clean water and sanitation, contributing to poverty reduction and improved quality of life.

Rumie. Many students in remote areas of the Philippines lack access to quality education due to poor internet and transportation connectivity. Rumie has created a platform that provides offline digital educational content through preloaded tablets and devices. The platform provides access to a wide range of educational resources, including interactive lessons, videos, and quizzes. The new educational solution has bridged the educational gap and provided greater equity in learning opportunities.
