The dance of uncertainties

This is why it's stupid to feel too safe.
Human nature is many things: limits and potential, clear colors and nuances, flashes of ingenuity but also stupidity.
Among these, the greatest is the stubbornness of those who continue to live in the fortress of their own certainties. Let's be clear: the problem isn't having fixed points, be they values, beliefs, or people. It's taking everything for granted, thinking that a certainty is enough to define paths, positions of advantage, prospects.
Not so! History and our individual stories demonstrate this.
Certainties today are in flux, and often their dance is macabre.
What's in flux is the certainty of the law, the sensitivity developed after the Second World War that had led humanity to believe in a long list of "never agains": never again crimes against humanity, never again genocide, never again indiscriminate bombings of urban areas, never again wars of conquest between sovereign states.
Principles called into question at the speed of light, in defiance of every form of progress.
What's at stake is the certainty of the ideas that once shaped the world, value systems that, despite limitations and errors, offered causes worth investing in and committing to.
Impetus lost along the way in a consumer society, in individualism, in a culture that places only self-realization at its center.
What's at stake is the certainty of fraternity, that code of practices and ideals that ennobled a society's struggle against selfishness, racism, fear of others, and anger toward the poor. For many, these attitudes were reminiscent of the book Cuore or of souls of great hope.
What's at stake is the certainty of progress and trust in science, of the respect due to those who know more. With disarming ease, it's no longer a problem to accredit anti-scientific views, to discredit vaccines, and sometimes even treatment options.
What's at stake is the certainty of feeling invincible, at peace, secure in one's own system of values that very often "fix" fears and unresolved issues. All it takes is a fragility, a new awareness, an inconsistency to erase everything.
The certainty of God, of those who considered him the natural reference for peoples and societies, is wavering. The triumphant God who provides answers to every question, a key to every concern, a solution to every problem. Just look around to understand that this is not the true image of God.
In such a scenario, what remains? What is saved in the intricate and contradictory fabric of life? There is one certainty! It is the certainty of hope that comes before everything else. Small, fragile, humble, yet powerful.
A certainty that expands only when communicated and shared, that allows us to see new chapters before the word "end," that uplifts us in difficult moments, allowing us to rediscover the commitment born of a newfound meaning. The only certainty capable of reviving so many "dangerous" certainties that would otherwise be lost forever.
