The alliance between democracy and mindfulness
Publish date 26-02-2025
In every part of the world, democracies, freedom and good governance suffer a double attack. The first is that of infocracy, the power of uncontrolled disinformation. The second threat is that of the managers of immense databases who play behind the scenes to maximize their profits and their power.
No democratic system seems to be able to effectively defend itself from that silent pincer attack, nor does it know how to explain its characteristics to its citizens. Indeed, some political parties take advantage of it to justify authoritarianism as a solution, trying to hide its antidemocratic nature.
Asia is no exception, but it is looking for its own original way to defend itself. The Asian formula, once again after 2500 years of experience, is that of mindfulness, the quantitative and qualitative maximization of awareness. Self-awareness and emotional regulation can help citizens become less reactive to propaganda and divisive rhetoric, including with the help of ingenious group consultation apps, encrypted if necessary to protect everyone’s safety.
This allows for more thoughtful consideration of information and policy choices. Mindfulness also encourages nonjudgmental observation, which can help individuals analyze information objectively and develop more nuanced perspectives on complex issues. Finally, mindfulness can promote civil dialogue and compassion, which can facilitate greater understanding and tolerance of different points of view. This can improve communication and cooperation within highly diverse societies.
In Bangladesh and other countries, mindful communication helps reduce conflict escalation and promote constructive dialogue between individuals and groups with opposing views. Experiments have begun in cities in Thailand and Indonesia to strengthen democratic institutions and participation and to develop more aware, ethical and compassionate leaders, who can facilitate more inclusive and responsive governance.
