Necessary peace
Publish date 14-04-2026

ARE WE STILL CAPABLE OF CHOOSE PEACE? Do we recognize its extraordinary and indispensable value? Peace, yes, and I'll start! When we choose true peace—and not a simple armistice—then we can envision a more just, welcoming, and dignified society for all. However, we must work deeply on ourselves and our communities, abandoning the shortcuts of violence and arrogance. History and current events are certainly filled with wars, but they are also rich in many examples of people and groups who have chosen alternative paths to try, with their lives, to build relationships based on kindness, solidarity, and dialogue. It takes time, perhaps a lifetime, but those who have tried know it's worth it!
IN THIS FOCUS, a photo and a reflection by Roberto Cristaudo introduce the theme of Necessary Peace. Chiara Vitali takes us to Haiti, the pearl of the Caribbean, wounded by years of tyranny, corruption, clashes, and violence. Giulia Grimaldi tells us about the völkisch phenomenon in Germany, an opportunity to discover the Nazis next door and those who, with determination, wish to raise awareness to stop any racist and violent involution in society. Following, Ernesto Olivero, Rosanna Tabasso, and many friends of Sermig, accompanied by the faces of so many young people and adults present at the Arsenale during the New Year's Eve celebrations, remind us of the gentle yet firm and decisive force of disarming kindness and of choices for peace. We also wish to share some evocative excerpts from the messages of Leone XIV for the World Day of Peace and from President Sergio Mattarella in his end-of-year speech.
